Nathan Chen made history at the 2017 US Figure Skating Championships when he successfully completed five quadruple jumps! It almost seems like he is some kind of Superman!  Chen has always done incredible skating, but five quadruple jumps seemed unreal.  He is now the first person in ice skating history to land five quadruple jumps in competition and he’s only 17 years old!

Chen is the youngest of five children. His parents emigrated from Beijing, China, but he was born and raised n the Salt Lake City area.  He began to skate when he was only three years old because he had brothers that played ice hockey and he trained at the same rink that was used as the practice arena at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games .

In 2010, Chen won the men’s novice title at the US Championships when he was only 10 years old. The following year, in 2011, he won the novice men’s title again and then went on to take the US junior men’s title in 2012 and 2014.  It seems as if he was born to skate and I’ve heard that he is passionate about figure skating.

Figure skating television commentator and Olympic figure skating champion Tara Lipinski said on NBC that she thinks that former world champion and Olympic silver medalist Patrick Chan might be in shock if he saw and observed Chen’s US championship win that included the five amazing quadruple jumps.  Chan and other top elite male figure skaters in the world just don’t usually land five quadruple jumps in one program!   It has been said that Chen could possibly win gold at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games that will take place in in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

It will be interesting to see if Nathan Chen can repeat the performances he did the the 2017 US Figure Skating Championships at the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships that will take place in Helsinki, Finland at the end of March , early April, 2017.

Happy Skating!
